Let us first begin with definitions. 

A monogram is a set of 3 letters, first, middle and last name.  These can be sequenced any way you like, but the traditional monogram is first initial, last initial, middle initial.  The last initial, or whatever letter you choose for the center will be a little larger that the two on the ends.

An initial, is just one letter. It can stand for a first name, last name, nickname or whatever you like, but it is just one letter.
